In many Boomer households, milk wasn’t just a drink—it was a mealtime staple. Parents, armed with the wisdom of 1950s food pyramids and aggressive dairy marketing, insisted on it with every meal. It didn’t matter if the entrée was spaghetti or tuna casserole—milk was the universal pairing.

The idea of drinking juice or soda with dinner? Practically rebellious. Schools reinforced the norm, offering no alternative beverages in lunch lines. Calcium-rich and mandated, milk was the white elixir of childhood, gulped down dutifully with peas, pork chops, and potatoes.
