#4: Kids Ran Errands For Mom
Back in the Boomer days, kids were more than just children—they were tiny taskmasters of domestic duty. It wasn’t unusual for a mother to hand her child a scribbled shopping list and a few crumpled bills, then send them off to the neighborhood store alone.

No cell phones. No tracking. Just trust. At the counter, clerks often helped customers read the list or select the right items. Some stores even extended credit, writing purchases into a little notebook. These errands built independence, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility—all under the unspoken motto: “Don’t come back without the eggs.”
