#2: A rising filmmaker chose it for her first feature
Amy Heckerling, fresh out of NYU and AFI, had only a single short film on her résumé when Universal brought her in to direct a full-length project. While reading through possible scripts, she came across Fast Times at Ridgemont High and immediately connected with its voice, characters, and sense of youthful honesty.

Choosing it as her debut feature, Heckerling brought an eye for humor and everyday detail that shaped the film’s identity. The experience also paved the way for her later work, including Clueless, the defining high-school comedy of the 1990s and one that cemented her place in teen-movie history.
