#3: A real student who inspired a character found success in an unexpected field
While Cameron Crowe was undercover at Claremont High, he befriended a student named Andy Rathbone, whose personality and experiences helped shape the character Mark Ratner. Rathbone stood out to Crowe as thoughtful, sincere, and easy to root for, making him a natural fit for the film’s gentler, more grounded side.

As an adult, Rathbone carved out a writing career of his own. After spending time in magazine journalism, he shifted into the world of technology guides, eventually authoring dozens of computer books. His best-known work includes several titles in the For Dummies series, which turned him into a go-to name for accessible tech writing.
