#21: Rear-Facing Station Wagon Seats
For kids of the boomer generation, sitting in the way-back of a station wagon was both a thrill and a rite of passage. These flip-up rear seats faced backward, offering a unique perspective of the world as it flew by. It wasn’t just about the view—it was the feeling of independence, waving to strangers, or making faces at the car behind you.

Safety wasn’t exactly top of mind, but the feeling of freedom was immense. As minivans and SUVs took over, the rear-facing seat became a novelty of the past. Still, the memory of that reversed road trip sticks with every child who rode back there.
