In Fairmount, James struggled to find his footing, but he was fortunate to meet a local Methodist pastor named Rev. James DeWeerd. The two formed a close, somewhat mysterious bond that would shape Dean’s worldview.

DeWeerd exposed him to poetry, art, theater, and car racing—interests Dean would carry with him for the rest of his life. The pastor’s influence offered Dean a creative outlet and an emotional escape. During this time, James began to draw, sculpt, and think more seriously about performance and storytelling.
