He quickly stood out for his raw intensity, drawing comparisons to Marlon Brando. New York also exposed him to a new circle of artists and thinkers, including fellow actor Martin Landau, who became his roommate. The city pushed Dean creatively and personally, offering a grittier, more intellectually vibrant world than Los Angeles.
