#33: The Longest River in Cuba
The Cauto River, flowing through the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba in eastern Cuba, is the island’s longest river, stretching 230 miles (370 kilometers) from its source in the Sierra Maestra mountains to its mouth at the Gulf of Guacanayabo.

Along its journey across basaltic plains, the Cauto is fed by tributaries like the Salado, Bayamo, and Contramaestre rivers. While not entirely navigable, small vessels can travel about 70 miles along its lower course. The surrounding fertile lands support agriculture and livestock, with rice, sugar beets, tobacco, and cattle forming the backbone of economic activity along the riverbanks.
