#20: Why the First Season Stayed Monochrome
As television transitioned from black and white to color in the mid-1960s, I Dream of Jeannie made an unusual choice. Despite the popularity of color TV, the show’s entire first season was aired in black and white. One key reason was the technical challenge of creating Jeannie’s magical smoke effects.

At the time, producing vibrant, convincing smoke in color was costly and unreliable. The grayscale visuals helped conceal imperfections and maintain a sense of mystery. Although the decision was rooted in practicality, it gave the early episodes a distinct, nostalgic charm before the show transitioned to full color in its second season.
