#13: Gavin MacLeod Nearly Became Archie Bunker
Before Carroll O’Connor made Archie Bunker iconic, Gavin MacLeod read for the role, though he did so reluctantly. MacLeod was deeply uncomfortable with the character’s bigotry and questioned whether such charged subject matter belonged in a comedy like All in the Family.

His hesitation reflected a larger fear many actors shared early on. The show’s willingness to tackle racism and prejudice through humor felt risky and unconventional. In hindsight, MacLeod’s concerns highlight just how radical All in the Family was when it first arrived.
