#22: Carroll O’Connor and Norman Lear Frequently Clashed
Despite All in the Family’s success, Carroll O’Connor and Norman Lear had a famously rocky working relationship. The two clashed several times over the show’s direction, leading to boycotts and contract holdouts as O’Connor pushed back against creative decisions.

O’Connor, a writer in his own right, often rewrote Archie’s dialogue himself. Sometimes Lear approved the changes, sometimes he didn’t, but the tension reflected how deeply O’Connor cared about the character and how seriously both men took the show’s voice.
