#5: California – Tom Bradley (1973–1993)
Tom Bradley’s twenty-year run as mayor of Los Angeles reshaped the city and its skyline. The city’s first Black mayor, Bradley, opened doors that had long been closed. He helped secure the 1984 Olympics, expanded LAX, and oversaw massive downtown redevelopment.

A former police officer with a calm, determined demeanor, he won over a multiethnic coalition during turbulent political times. Bradley’s long tenure reflected the hopes of a diversifying metropolis, and his influence still echoes through L.A.’s modern infrastructure.
