#16: She Was Held Hostage
The settlers of Jamestown made their warning unmistakably brutal: if Chief Japasaw—or anyone else—dared to retaliate, Pocahontas would pay the price. Though still young, Pocahontas understood the gravity of her situation. With the clarity of a mother under threat, she made a painful choice.

Determined to protect her child, she entrusted her newborn daughter to the care of the village women, knowing it was the only way to keep her safe. Moments later, Pocahontas was taken aboard a colonial ship and locked below deck. No longer a guest or neighbor, she had become a hostage in a power struggle.
