By 1614, Chief Wahunsenaca could wait no longer. Determined to bring his daughter home, he launched a rescue mission—a risky endeavor that resulted in bloodshed and the loss of many Powhatan warriors. Eventually, after fierce resistance, Pocahontas was permitted to speak with her father face-to-face.

But the reunion didn’t go as he had hoped. According to later accounts, Pocahontas stunned him with her words. She expressed no desire to return home. Instead, she said she wished to travel to England—a decision that left her father shaken.
