Pocahontas had fulfilled the role the English carved out for her—ambassador, convert, peacemaker. She had become the face of harmony between two clashing worlds, a living emblem of what the settlers viewed as success. But five long years had passed since she was first taken from her homeland, and the weight of separation grew heavier with time.

Now 21, Pocahontas longed to return to see her father, her people, and the land that shaped her. She pleaded with her husband, John Rolfe, to take her home. At last, preparations were made. She would finally set sail for Virginia—at least, that was the plan.
