Among the Powhatan people, it was tradition for the paramount chief to have several wives, each from a different tribe within the confederacy. Once a wife became pregnant, she was expected to return to her native village to carry and deliver the child.

The baby would remain there until it was old enough to be considered strong and healthy, at which point it was brought back to the father’s household to join his other children. The mother, meanwhile, was free to remarry and move on with her life. As for Pocahontas’s mother, little survives in record—only that she shared her daughter’s spirited nature.
