#32: She Would Never Return to Her Land
Rather than honoring her final wish to return home, the English buried Pocahontas in England, far from the rivers and forests of her youth. They claimed it was to preserve her image as a faithful Englishwoman, a symbol of successful assimilation. But to her family, it was a devastating betrayal.

Her tribe never had the chance to say goodbye, to mourn her properly, or to lay her to rest in sacred soil. Her father, Chief Wahunsenaca, is said to have died from the grief of losing her. Repeated pleas for the return of her body were ignored; her people met only with silence.
