#4: Did She Really Save John Smith?
John Smith’s legendary tale of Pocahontas swooping in to save him from execution has long enchanted audiences, but it bends truth more than it reflects it. In his own account, the Englishman claimed he was taken prisoner by Opechancanough, a Powhatan leader who led him from village to village as a kind of living spectacle.

Eventually, Smith arrived at the village of Chief Powhatan—Pocahontas’s father—where the supposed execution scene unfolded. Pocahontas, he said, intervened dramatically to spare his life. Yet historians now widely believe this rescue never occurred and that Smith likely misunderstood, exaggerated, or invented parts of the encounter.
