There was no romance between John Smith and Pocahontas—only tension and survival. Far from being a welcome guest, Smith was seen by many in the Powhatan villages as a menace. He reportedly raided homes, stealing food and resources, ba ehavior that quickly wore out any goodwill.

Eventually, his actions caught up with him, and he was captured. Yet external threats soon shifted priorities. Spanish forces posed a new danger to the Powhatan people, prompting Chief Wahunsenaca—Pocahontas’s father to form an uneasy alliance.
