#8: A Woman of Many Talents
Pocahontas, like most Powhatan girls, was likely trained in a wide array of practical skills from a young age. By thirteen, girls were expected to manage the home—an expectation met with competence and tradition. They tended gardens, prepared animal hides, and foraged with expert knowledge of the forest’s plants.

Pocahontas probably knew how to construct a sturdy shelter, cook nourishing meals, fetch water with ease, and care for young children. Within Powhatan society, women shouldered nearly all domestic and communal responsibilities. While men hunted and protected the tribe, it was the women who quietly kept their world running day after day.
