#15: Harry S. Truman, First Elected 1948
Harry Truman became president suddenly in 1945 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death. Three years later, he shocked the nation by winning a full term in 1948, even though polls said he’d lose. His cross-country train tour and direct, fiery speeches helped him connect with everyday Americans who liked his honesty.

At first, people admired him for ending World War II and rebuilding the country. But as time went on, things got tough. Prices rose, workers went on strike, and the Korean War made many Americans restless. His approval rating fell fast, hitting just 22% by the end of his term.
