His Time in Office
Truman faced some of the biggest moments in U.S. history. He made the call to drop atomic bombs on Japan, helped start NATO, and launched the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe. At home, he fought for civil rights and tried to improve life for working Americans.

Still, the public was worn out by war and change. Many thought he was too blunt or too stubborn. His popularity never recovered, averaging about 45% overall — the lowest of any modern president. When he left office, he was ready for peace and proud of doing what he believed was right.
