#7: Jerry O’Connell as Vern Tessio
Vern Tessio provides much of the film’s warmth and humor, his anxiety and earnestness softening the group’s sharper edges. O’Connell plays Vern with openness rather than mockery, allowing fear, loyalty, and innocence to coexist in a way that makes the character deeply endearing.

During production, Jerry O’Connell was a child actor experiencing his first major breakthrough. Stand by Me introduced him to audiences as the emotional comic relief, though the role’s sincerity hinted at a performer capable of more than broad humor.
